John K Dewey Wallpapering - Knoxville 865 606 5127
Hi, I'm John Dewey, and welcome to my Knoxville wallpapering website.
In the photo below, I'm the one on the right!
As you will see from this website, I am relatively new to Knoxville, but far from new to wallpapering! In the 70's, after my 2 year stint in the US Army in Germany, I attended the US School of Professional Paperhanging in Rutland Vermont, and started a wallpapering (paperhanging) business. That was the beginning of a lifetime of experience. This is the condensed version of how I ended up in Knoxville, via Boston, and then Cape Town.
My career started in the residential market, usually with one or two rooms of wallpaper. Certainly, paperhanging has never been boring: each day brings a new and client, paper, and room. I have developed a real love for wallpapering, and I gained tremendous satisfaction from producing results as pictured below.
Over the years, I worked on jobs of all shapes and sizes, with all types of wall-coverings, which gave me very valuable experience.
I was a member of the National Guild of Professional Paperhangers from 1989 on-wards. The Guild was a valuable resource as it provides on-going training in their publications and workshops, and keeps one up to date on the latest developments in the trade.
After twenty-nine years of wallpapering in the Boston area, and with a very good reputation, I decided to move to South Africa from Massachusetts and get married in 2005. Conway Twitty's and Loretta Lynn's " Mississippi Man - Louisiana Woman" was nothing compared to this swim!
Timeously, wallpaper was coming becoming highly popular in Cape Town, after it had been in decline for many years. My wife founded Wallaroo Wallpapering, so that I could legally work in South Africa. Our business blossomed in Cape Town. Many of the photos on this site are from South African jobs.
The following client testimonials are all from recent Knoxville area installations.
November 2019; Stephanie from Notting Hill Road, Knoxville ....... "John was a pleasure to work with and prompt to get the job done. His work speaks for itself-beautiful. He was very knowledgeable about the process, and provided all the supplies. I will definitely ask him to help me with some more wall-covering projects in the future and I strongly recommend him."
In South Africa, my step-son and I wallpapered very many homes, all over the beautiful Cape Town.
We were hired by John Jacob Interiors, one of the leading interior designers in South Africa to wallpaper the Grand Suite at Vergelegen Wine Estate, in Somerset West, near Cape Town, for Prince Charles' visit in 2012. The photos can be viewed below, and on the portfolio page, along with many other challenging and interesting installations.
The above two photos are of two of the rooms of the suite in which
Prince Charles stayed.
On two separate occasions we were hired to install De Gournay wallpapers, and other papers at the iconic, and prestigious Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe, for Graham Viney. Graham is the author of the book A Guide to the Historic Homesteads of South Africa, and he is also another of South Africa's leading designers.
We were truly blessed and wallpapered many well known wine estates in the Cape Winelands. Below is the restaurant at La Motte Wine Estate, in Franschhoek South Africa, owned by the Rupert family.
The above two photos are of the dining room at Klein Constantia Wine estate In Cape Town. It is the African Scene from de Gournay. And yes that is me in the top photo.
We did over 1500 wall wallpaper installations in South Africa.
In early 2019, though wallpapering was still flourishing in Cape Town and South Africa, we decided to return to my home country. The extremely high incidence of crime in South Africa and the state of near-collapse as regards infrastructure motivated our decision. We are very much enjoying being back in the good old USA, and particularly in Tennessee, and the Knoxville-Maryville area, and we are here to stay.
About wallpapering: Many wallpaper installations are relatively straight forward. Others can be complex and demanding, such as hand-painted, and hand-trimmed murals and wallpapers from de Gournay, Zuber and others. These always require more time and care. For these and other high-end papers a professional is always best.
After all these years, my enthusiasm for installing wallpaper has not diminished one bit. So if you need an installation done, no matter how small or how big, let me use my lifetime of experience for your benefit.

Just ask ..... Linda in Tellico Village ....... "John installed wallpaper in four rooms of our new home. All the areas look fabulous, and we are happy to have hired him. You will be too. John provided a professional and friendly service." October 2019
Susan in Oak Ridge .......... " Thank you and Lydia for doing such a great job with the wallpaper on Monday. It looks beautiful. Best of luck with your business. I will pass your name along and recommend you all if the opportunity arises" September 2019
